I agree with the sentiment of this video but it really fucking bothers me to see a man calling a woman a “dumb bitch.” That is never okay. Responding to oppression (racism) with another oppression (sexism, ableism) is not a valid tactic. I get harassed regularly by men on the street where I live. Some of them are men of color. Just because they make me feel unsafe as a woman doesn’t give me the right to yell racist shit at them, and the opposite is just as true.

      dear white women,

      shut the fuck up, forever.

      also have a seat.

      thanks,

someone who is grateful not to be that self-obsessed

Awesome. A message about racism and someone (white) goes BUT WHAT ABOUT SEXISM.

Don’t forget the bonus LANGUAGE POLICE~~~~~

I will admit that the term “dumb bitch” bothers me, as a rape victim recovering, but since we cannot read everyone’s minds, we just have to accept being Schrödinger’s Racist and deal. I experienced it recently when I was exitting my apartment building(in a particularly shady and methy area of town) with my head down, attempting to avoid the creepy men when I heard a man actually scream in fear, “yo hold up!”, when I looked up, it was a dark skinned man, not much bigger than myself, and I am generally considered petite. I apologised for frightening him, and he responded in like, saying he had thought I was a “white dude”. In that moment I was Schrödinger’s Racist. This man was minding his own business and did not know I was not a threat, and it was 100% okay for him to feel that way. I see this a lot in white people too who clutch their items closer or even side-eye those of colour passing them and not only do I see it, but I hear it, often and loudly. I live in an apartment building in the inner city area and the few white people that live in my building seem almost proud to loudly proclaim about how they dislike this or that ethnic demographic. It’s incredibly racist and yet, they deny that it has anything to do with the structural racism that has been imprinted in them since birth. Drop thinking of yourselves for a second, and since you are already acquainted with Schrödinger’s Rapist, think about how, since you’re white as hell, you could be construed as Schrödinger’s Racist.
The elevator is an interesting setting where there are only two people and there is no third party to place an institutional hierarchy upon the two people involved and the woman’s body language was instant upon sight of the man entering. You can “yeah but, sexism!” here all you like but the fact remains that the man being portrayed cannot read the woman’s mind. He can only read her body language, and her instant lean away and very obvious clutching of her purse against her person is meant to illustrate the ingrained racism than general fear of men, as the video is obviously implying. The woman is white and is thus then Schrödinger’s Racist. Being that her body language heavily implies that she is clutching her purse specifically to demonstrate the narrative of the non-white criminal, and not clutching her entire body to herself to protect herself against general male violation(as is my understanding) I am sure the video is meant to illustrate the often very subtle ways that racism in particular can invade the most seemingly benign of scenarios. It’s to remind you that you could be perceived as a potential racist, if you aren’t actually one already(and denying your privilege pretty much says you are), even if the language of the video was unsettling(and triggering for any woman who has heard “dumb bitch” in a similar angry tone while being raped, or assaulted).

From the article I linked for Schrödinger’s Racist:

The other point I want to make here, which goes back to my objection to anti-black racism being used as a rhetorical device by those who will never face it, is that black people engage in tons of behaviours to make white people feel safer. We do this all the damn time. We make accommodations in speech, behaviour, dress, mannerism, conversation topic – a wide diversity of adjustments that we make in the presence of our white friends. We want them to feel comfortable around us, and we accept the inherent racism of the need for such changes. The fact that you rail against its manifest unfairness is indicative of the fact that you have no idea we’re doing it – which means, in turn, that we’re doing it well. Until I am convinced that you actually understand anti-black racism (which would take quite a bit of doing), I don’t appreciate being deputized into your anti-feminist screed in this way.

So think about that and the message of the elevator video again. Read the whole thing, I think it demonstrates the interplay taking place in the video quite well as well as the interplay in the comments when someone ultimately called out the sexist language present in the video and seemingly overlooked the message of the video itself, which is profound and subtle and very well illustrated.
